Paphos is a pretty little town full of charisma and charm. The harbour is delightful and full of atmosphere where if you are lucky, you might see the pelicans that seem to take delight in tourists photographing them. If you have the time, and indeed why not as you are on holiday, it is very pleasing to sit at one of the cafes or bars sipping a nice cold drink absorbing the ambiance and aura.
It has a mixture of modern with historical buildings and is full of culture. It features on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list, not least because it has plenty to keep history lovers occupied.
The old town of Paphos is a sheer delight. Here you will see the Byzantine castle amongst the cobbled streets with plenty of places to stop off for a beer, or ice cream. The daily market also takes place here where you will be able to find plenty of touristy items, as well as fruit and vegetables.
Paphos itself does not really have a nice beach, however Coral Bay is reasonably close, a taxi to and from the bay from Paphos is about 3 - 5 Cypriot pounds. It is worth the journey and effort when you get there though. It is also possible to take a public bus which runs from Paphos.
There are some nice restaurants in both the old town and also around the harbour, including some seafood and fish restaurants. Paphos has a pretty laid back night life, but there are some bars which are lively and most play popular music.
Some interesting places to visit whilst at Paphos are:
The Temple of Aphrodite
The 16th Century Fortress
The Mosaics of Paphos
The Tombs of the Kings
Aphrodite's birthplace and temple
Troodos Mountains
The Paphos Acropolis
Organised excursions and car hire are available to enable visiting these sights easier, but public transport is available around Paphos.
We would recommend Paphos to couples who are looking for a quiet holiday, but with plenty of culture and heritage to see.
